Farm Facts
Farmers' markets play a big role in helping farmers keep farming.
In Ontario, there are 10,000 fewer farms than 10 years ago. Many small family farms have been forced to sell to developers or huge factory farm operations because they weren't able to make a living and their kids couldn't see a future in farming. Local farmers' markets play an important role in helping save-and/or grow-a family farm business because instead of farmers receiving just 10-21 percent of the retail price of their produce at places like Loblaw's, at farmers' markets, they get to keep, on average, 84 percent. That's why many small family farms sell at multiple local farmers' markets. Farmers' markets make it worth their while to keep on farming - and keep their farmland producing food. In a research report released in 2009 on farmers' markets in Canada (the most comprehensive one ever conducted in North America), 42 per cent of market vendors said they achieved more than half their farm income from farmers' market sales. Furthermore, more than half of vendors created up to five jobs as a result participating in markets.
